Florence, a city which grownups call the “capital of the Renaissance”. No, that’s not like a cap that you wear on your head! It is a capital city, just like Washington DC, which is the capital of the U.S. Florence is the capital of the entire region of Tuscany (once it was even the capital city of all of Italy!) The Renaissance was a time when the arts flourished all across the world (you probably remember your art teacher talking and talking some more about it, and I bet you remember everything that she taught you …). So let’s not expand on this topic, because you already know it all. Let’s just say that Florence is so full and rich with museums, impressive and decorated squares, statues, palaces, gardens, and amazing churches, that it received the name the “capital of the Renaissance” because it is like the center and capital city of this beautiful period in Italy’s fine arts. Another reason why Florence received this name is that a large number of the world’s most famous artists and scientist were born in, lived in, and created their greatest works in Florence. An aerial view of the city of Florence and its bridges. The truth is that, as soon as you step onto Florence’s soil, you will feel a strange kind of excitement in the pit of your stomach. Just imagine that the world’s most famous and talented scientists, inventors, painters and sculptors have walked the same sidewalks as you are walking, and that a large number of the creations that they made with their very hands, paintings that they painted with their own brushes, sculptures that they sculpted with their own two hands, the world’s very first telescope and other special inventions – will all be right in front of you so that you can see and feel them. Don’t forget to take photographs to remember the city and to brag about it to all of your friends!!! Someone once wrote in an article that 350 out of Europe’s 1,000 most famous artists are from Florence (that’s one third!!!).
DID YOU KNOW WHO FOUNDED THE CITY OF FLORENCE? Julius Caesar, the famous Roman Emperor, founded this city as a gift to his outstanding soldiers who were given permission to live in the city after they had stopped fighting. When did this happen? In the year 59 BC. This is a time even before Jesus was born (which is, of course, the time when people first began counting the years – from year one AD, until today which is 2008 AD). Did you know? Florence is the first city in the world to print out paper money! They say that Florence is an excellent city for kids. Why is that? This city has cool museums for kids, parks that are incredibly fun to play in, and guys – since you are in ITALY – a million restaurants that serve pizza, ice cream and tons of spaghetti!
