Believe it or not, here you can see a genuine horse race! If you are not careful, the horses can trample you in a second! This entire city is one gigantic horse race! Everyone in the city dresses in costumes (just like in Halloween but with grandparents, parents and even teachers joining in!!!) as they shout and cheer for the horses. An entire city simply goes crazy!!! What’s with these Italians, you may ask? Well, the first horse race in this city took place in 1310 (you were not even in the planning stages back then, and neither were your great-great-grandparents). Every since the year 1310, the city of Siena holds two horse races every year without taking any breaks. Why you may ask? Tradition! What does the winner of the race receive in return for his sweat and hard work? No, you won’t believe it! A flag with a picture of Mary, Jesus’ mother, on it.

Think that’s strange? You haven’t heard anything yet! Do you have any idea how long this horse race lasts? Take a guess!!! Not two days, not even half a day. Anyone guess an hour? You are all wrong! The race lasts less than a few minutes. The city, however, is busy with this horse race all year long. Guessing who will win, planning the race, betting money on who will win, sewing uniforms and clothing for race day, and all for a race that lasts only a few minutes.

Can you imagine your homeroom teacher and school principal standing in the city square dressed in costumes and shouting “run, you thoroughbred. Come on gallop, let’s go!!….” Giddy Up!

Siena is a city in Tuscany, located in the mountains. This is a picture of a square in Siena called the Piazza del Campo, which is said to be one of the most beautiful squares on the European continent. This is the central location for Siena’s annual horse race.
