At Masada, in a fortress on a high cliff, lived a number of Jewish families during the period that the Romans were in control of the country. When the Romans finally conquered Masada, after laying siege to it for a long time, they found that almost everyone – men, women, and children – had preferred to take their own lives rather than be taken captive by the Romans.
At the site you can see (after you climb way way way way way way up the steps) the place where the Jews lived. You can hear explanations of (don't make a face, it's really very interesting) everything that happened there. The view is one of the best in Israel.
