Top Tips For Visiting Jakarta

Large cities are exciting places to visit, whether you choose to go to one of the mainstream metropolis’ in the world, such as New York, London, Milan, or Paris, or whether you choose to go to somewhere a little more, shall we say, exotic?

If you’re considering heading to somewhere a little more off the beaten track, why not place your map in the direction of Indonesia, and its bustling, vibrant, and cultural capital, Jakarta?

Now, there are many common myths about Jakarta, and whilst some of them are true, many of them are exactly that – myths. Despite all of that however, there are always tips to learn, in order to help your trip go without a hitch.

Choose your accommodation wisely

As with any destination in the world, particularly those which are located in this particular part of the planet, you need to be careful with where you choose to stay. Look at the rating, and look at the reviews from former guests, and then make your decision from there. Jakarta has many top class hotels, five star, and full of facilities, so you certainly won’t struggle; check out the Le Meridien Jakarta for instance. The best thing to do is to head online and have a search around, you will find the ‘book now’ button to enable you to quickly firm up your accommodation.

Don’t carry all of your cash on you at once

This is the same with many destinations, but pick pockets are commonplace in Jakarta. Only carry what you need, and keep the rest in your bank or in some other safe place, such as in a money belt, in a safe, or use a pre-paid travel card, so you don’t have extra cash on you, which could fall foul to petty thieves.

Shop ‘til you drop

Jakarta is a shopper’s dream so make sure you take advantage of that fact and hit the shops. You can choose from either large scale shopping malls, of which there are plenty, or you can head to a more traditional market, where you will be able to buy souvenirs to take back home with you.

Start your day early

The thing to remember about Jakarta is that it is large, it is busy, and it is bustling. There is a lot of traffic, and much of it doesn’t stop for anyone or anything! Because of this fact, get up early and head out to explore; don’t leave everything until late in the day, otherwise you will find that you run out of time and you’re frustrated that you’re getting nowhere fast.

Leave your inhibitions at home

Part of travel is about experiences, and that means being open to new things and at least giving it a try! Make sure you leave your inhibitions at the hotel every single morning – try that new dish, even if it looks like an insect, try haggling on the market, even if you’re not sure if you’re doing it right, and throw yourself into the busy nature of Jakarta life with everything you have – you won’t regret it!
